  Question of the week:

   Where is the exact geographic center of the United States located?

If you cannot answer the question at our meeting next week, or by e-mail if you don't attend next week, be prepared to pay the consequences.  This week it was apparent that no-one had read The Ripple since no-one could recite the Four Avenues of Rotary Service.  But President Steve was in a lenient mood and didn't fine anyone.

Prospective MemberJulie Erickson, Classification: Digital Communication  Services.

If anyone has reason that Julie should NOT be accepted as a members, please notify Membership Chairman Steve Smith by September 18, 2008.

Welcome to our two newest members, Steve Padulsky and Martha Holden ! !

Meeting notes

Today's visiting Rotarians: None.

Guests:   Julie Erickson

Today's Breakfast: Same as last week and the week before and the week before.

President Steve reminded us all to sell the Entertainment Books.  He also commended the club as we have nine members registered for the Disctrict Membership/Foundation Conference on Wednesday, September 17th.

President Steve reminded us that the Golf Tournament is fast approaching--September 22nd.  There are 70 golfers signed up--but there's plenty of room for many more!!  (From last week:  Perfecto's Caffe and Peabody Financial will sponsor the breakfast; Outback Steakhouse will sponsor the luncheon; and there'll be an Acura MDX as a hole-in-one prize, thanks to Acura of Peabody. Thanks to all!!)

IMPORTANT NOTEJoanne Donovan is collecting ALL information, so e-mail her with your list of donations, golfers, sponsors, etc. as soon as you know about them.  A repeat e-mail to Joanne wouldn't be a bad idea.

The International Festival will be on September 14th.  Nichole Nelsen is the committee chair.  She's bought a lot of candy to sell.  If you haven't given Nichole your volunteer time preference, let her know soon.

President Steve introduced our guest speakers, Grace Martins and her GSE Team: Matthew Grady, Dierdre MacDonough, Joanna Rheaume-Clement and Michael Miranda.  They were in Brazil for 32 days, going to 10 towns, and making 8 formal presentations--but they attended many more Rotary meetings and events.  They were all "true ambassadors", visiting locations akin to their vocations.  Team Leader Grace visited some hospitals, where there are several people to a room.  If one can afford it, perhaps a room with only one other.  Medical teams have to travel for hours to visit a patient or hospital.  So only four or five can be visited in a day.  Whereas, Nurse Grace can see that many in an hour back home.  Joanna is a HeadStart lead teacher and she noted the huge difference between public and private schools. Those whose families cannot afford to send them to private schools will most likely not finish high school.  Michael is a "green" architect and noted that Brazil is far ahead of the US with energy savings.  There's no air conditioning in homes, despite the tropic nature of the weather there.  Dierdre is a software engineer at a publishing firm in Ipswich.  She noted that there's no high speed internet in Brazil, which was very frustrating for her.  She, too, noted how "green" Brazil is, as they do quite a bit of recycling and Ethanol is used in most cars and all gas stations carry ethanol fuel.  Matthew works at Fidelity and was quite interested in the banks in Brazil.  They all noted that they've developed lasting friendships.  Oh--one more thing--they were never thirsty!

 Fred deNapoli and Grace Martins are on the District selection committee for the Outbound GSE team to South Africa.  The team will be going to Johannesburg at the end of February, returning at the end of March.  If you'd like to be considered as the team leader--as Grace was a few months ago--contact Fred or Grace.  And if you know any non-Rotarian between the ages of 20 and 45 who might be interested in going, lead them to Fred and Grace.

Mel Babner reminded everyone to sell the Entertainment Books.  He thanked Fred deNapoli  and Chuck Holden for taking 10 and 5 books, respectively.

Reminders:

SAVE THE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 17TH, from 3:00 TO 8:00PM.  This is the date of the District's Membership and Foundation Forum at the Sheraton Ferncroft.  This is where all Rotarians will learn more about how Rotary functions.  And with this knowledge and tips from the Membership segment, we'll better be able to attract and retain more members.  Please make every effort to attend.

NE Link is scheduled for September 26-27, in Worcester--basically 24 hours.  But sign up for some of the program or all of it.  The only way to register is online at :  http://www.northeastlink.org/html/nel_rotreg_active.shtml.  Go to the site to learn more about NE Link.  And don't forget, unless you'd like to make a contribution, the club will pay for your attendance at NE Link and at the District Conference.

A.:  Near Lebanon, Kansas

*

Did you know that Larry Lucchino had been an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1973-4?  NELink (September 26-27) is trying to get him to speak.  The snag may be that the Red Sox are playing the Evil Empire (aka the Yankees) that weekend.  For those who don't read the Rotarian (but you should!!), this month's issue tells us that the Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the LARGEST PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN THE WORLD!!  By the way, the other locally well-known person who had been an Ambassadorial Scholar is former Lt. Governor Kerry Healy.

*

There's a Golf Committee meeting every Monday at 9:00AM at Teddy Bettencourt's office at 30 Main Street.  Start thinking about and asking potential sponsors as well as golfers.  There are only 2+ weeks left until September 22nd!!   President Steve wants everyone to obtain a "Perfect 10"--a combination of 10 golfers, sponsors, donation items.  He's working on a flyer and registration form which he'll e-mail soon.

*

The Taste Of The North Shore now has three restaurants signed up.  And Bob Sweeney is working on the tickets.  They should be ready for the Golf Tournament.  The Chamber of Commerce will be sending out e-mail reminders to "Save the Date" of March 24th, 2009.

*

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel Babner.  Every nickel helps!!  Mel Thanks Dick Berg, Ralph Raynard and Gayle Cavanaugh for their generous contributions.

There must be a ton of empty beer cans and bottles from July 4th weekend and all summer--please give them to Mel.

*

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

 *

Happy Dollars:  Acting Sergeant-at-arms Herb Harris collected $75.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.   Fred deNapoli had a letter to the Editor published in the Salem News on September 4th.

*

50-50 Raffle: The pool was $65.50.  Neither Martha Holden nor President Steve picked the KING OF CLUBS or the $50 Joker.

*

1. IS IT THE TRUTH?   2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?   3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP?   4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

Two guys are in the woods when a bear starts chasing them. They climb a tree, but the bear starts climbing up after them.

The first guy gets his sneakers out of his backpack and starts putting them on.

The second guy says, "What are you doing?"

The first guy replies, "I figure when the bear gets too close, we'll have to jump down and make a run for it."

The second guy says, "Are you crazy? You can't outrun a bear!"

The first guy says..   I don't have to outrun the bear. I only have to outrun you!
