President Martha began the meeting by wishing Happy Birthday to Brian, Ann Spac-Danjou's husband, Don, Jeff's wife, Christine and Norm Burnett. Jeff was glad that President Martha reminded him. Also, she wished Happy Anniversary to Fred and Rachel and to Don and Ann Spac-Danjou.
President Martha encouraged members to let her know if you will attend the District Foundation/Membership Conference on September 30th. It begins at 3:00 and includes dinner, so it shouldn't intrude in anyone's day too much. Members will learn a lot about the Foundation and how it operates and will pick up many hints on new membership development.
President Martha said that there will be a fireside chat for newer members on Monday evening, October 18th. ALL are invited. More details to follow.
Golf: Bob C said that there was a golf committee meeting attended by Peggy P and Brian. So far there are 82 golfers signed up. Peggy said that there are 10 4-somes who golfed last year, but haven't registered yet. Brian had suggested placing flyers on car windshields at the Meadow. The Meadow management will be contact to see if that's OK. NOW is the time to continue to sell golfers, ads, raffle items and sponsorships. The Tournament is only LESS THAN THREE WEEKS AWAY!!!!! The Chamber of Commerce is doing the adbook, so let them know if you want to advertise. We'll be collecting raffle and auction items, as well as sponsorships. Definitely needed are $125 Tee Sponsorships as well as ads for the adbook. Please help Bob and join his committee. Here's the link to the Peabody Chamber of Commerce's website with the flyer: http://secure.chambermaster.com/FCKeditor/UserFiles/chambers/340/File/Golf%202010.pdf
International Festival: Peggy L said that she has ordered the pies--200 Apple and 50 Blueberry. They'll be delivered to the Y on Saturday, September 11th. Peggy has a couple of volunteers who will transport the pies on Sunday. And she passed around a sign-up sheet for 2-hour shifts. Let her know when you can help. President Martha said that Arrow Paper has donated fully biogradable plates--enough to last us at least three years.
Literacy: Cathy brought the joint Rotary/PEC calendars fresh. Let Cathy know if you want one. Loring will be happy to bill you the $20.
Entertainment Books: Mel said that the 2011 books are in and some have been distributed. He'd like all members to take some to sell--particularly those who have customers, clients, patients who visit their locations.
Bob C reminded himself and the club that he and Grace were to serve at Citizens For Adequate Housing tonight.
*************************************
Grace introduced our guest speaker, Don Doliber. Don has retired as the Assistant Principal of Masconomet Regional High School, where he had taught History. He had been named the Most Outstanding History Teacher in the U.S. as well as the Most Outstanding Assistant Principal in MA. In addition to teaching History, he also helped immigrants to become US citizens by assisting them pass the citizenship test. His program today was to give us a quiz, all of the questions of which are asked on the citizenship test. In addition to giving us the answers, he elaborated on them with detailed explanations. It appears that several club members may have their citizenships revoked and be expelled from the country.
******************************
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Bob C collected $100.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Loring nor Jesse picked the Seven of Hearts so no-one won the $154.00. But Jesse picked the $50 Joker.
*******************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! He thanks former member and President Dick Berg,Bob C and Herb for their generous contributions.

Thank you!

A minister told his congregation, "Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17." The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying."
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
