Meeting notes

Today's visiting Rotarians: None

Guests:  Michael Wilson, guest of Steve Smith.

Bob Clattenberg was introduced as a guest, but he's now a member.

President Steve reminded Martha, Herb & Ellen that they're feeding Haven From Hunger on June 5th.

*

Cathy has the sign-up sheet for the District Installation Dinner, which will be on Tuesday, June 30th at the Danversport Yacht Club.  This super annual event is only $60 per person.

*

President Steve reminded us that the club's installation dinner will be on Wednesday, June 24th at the Wardhurst Restaurant.  Details are forthcoming.  There will be no meeting the following morning.

*

Grace mentioned that Cathy will be doing the 3-day Cancer Walk in July.  On June 6th, there'll be a fundraiser dance to help support her efforts.

 *

Herb thanked Peggy Pedro, Steve Smith, Loring and Martha for their e-mailed website suggestions.  They are much appreciated.  Everyone should continue to look and suggest areas that need improvement.  And a very big

THANK YOU

to VANESSA SILVEIRA, our newest member, for stepping up to help edit The Ripple.  We would like one or two more volunteers to join us!!

*

There will be a District training on June 4th for anyone who wants to learn about being an Ambasadorial Scholar Sponsor.  This is for both Host sponsor for those from other countries here in the U.S. and Sponsor Counselor, should our club sponsor an Ambasadorial Scholar.  This session is really  great just to learn about the program and what's entailed, whether or not one becomes a sponsor.

   *

At the end of our meeting, President Steve presented Take A Bow with a

$1,000 check to help them replace the High School's auditorium curtain.  Their group sold Taste tickets for us and this was their "commission" and then some.  Accepting the check were Peggy Weiser and Kristi Jeffers.

*

Grace introduced today's speakers, Albert Senesie, of Victory Human Services, and Jimmy Schiavone, owner of Martoni & James Jewelry in the Hallmark Building in Peabody.  These are the folks who Grace thought were going to be with us last week.  Very interesting presentation and well worth the wait!  Albert and Jimmy formed a partnership to mine diamonds and other gems in Siera Leone, donating a portion of their profits to the poverty stricken areas where they mined.  After a 10 minute video about Siera Leone, Albert told us of its history, natural resources and politics.  Jimmy explained the alluvial mining process.  Gems of all kinds, but mainly diamonds, are spread by the rivers and settle into the dirt.  The dirt is extracted and sifted to retrieve the diamonds.  Jimmy passed around some raw diamonds of varying colors.  (Did he got them all back?)

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of

  interest to the club.

BOARD MEETING NOTES

As you all know, the Board meetings are open to all members.  As a matter of fact, everyone is encouraged to attend these meetings.  I went to the Board meeting that followed our May 28th meeting.  Here's some of what was discussed:  The June 5th service for Haven From Hunger will be our last one.  We will begin serving Citizens For Adequate Housing this summer or early fall.  Betsy Lehman from CAH will be our speaker on June 18th.  We will award 11 $1,000 scholarships out of the 50 applicants.  On Tuesday, June 16th, at 5:00PM, we will make a presentation to the students and their parents.  This will be followed by a Board Meeting.  The location is to be determined.  We will participate in the International Festival on September 13th.  Sales items to be determined.  The next day we will co-sponsor the Peter Torigian Golf Tournament with the Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce and the City Council's drug awareness group.  There's very little overlap between our participants (golfers, sponsors and advertisers) and the Chamber's.  So this event should be larger than either of the two had been alone.           --Ed.

Reminders:

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.   Every nickel helps!!  Mel thanks Dick Berg and Herb Harris for their generous contributions.

 ******************************

Happy Dollars:  This month's Sergeant-at-arms, Steve Padulsky, collected $51

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: Neither President Steve (again) nor Steve Smith picked the Ace of Diamonds, so neither won the $107.  But President Steve picked the $50 joker!!

NEXT MEETINGS:

 June 4:

 June 11:

Please make every effort to attend your Rotary meetings. The more members we have each week, the better we look to potential members--and to our visitors and speakers.

Thank you!

After suffering through years of his wife's awful coffee, the man spit it out and took the coffee maker to his lawyer.

Dropping it on the attorney's desk, the man snarl, ""Here they are!"

"Here are what?" the startled lawyer asked.

"Grounds for divorce."

It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member.  It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter.  That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
