President Steve began the meeting by reminding everyone that the deadline to apply to be the team leader for the Group Study Exchange to London is June 8th.  The team will be in London from September 19th to October 19th.  When leading a GSE team, ability to speak the language of the host country is mandatory.  So the leader must be proficient in the English language.

*

Grace reported on the May 1st Haven From Hunger visit.  She, Peggy Lyons and a friend of Grace's served 25 people.

*

President Steve announced that the club's installation dinner will be on Wednesday, June 24th at the Wardhurst Restaurant.  Details are forthcoming.  There will be no meeting the following morning.

*

Membership Chair Steve Smith and Martha Holden were to review the City employee list after today's meeting.  They were to discuss potential club members and strategize.

*

Grace thanked Cathy for her efforts with Y It Matters.  The families of the 14 students we helped with our $3,000 said that each of them are doing better in school because of the program.

*

         Camera-shy Cathy

Bob Wood presented President Steve with the District Governor's Citation which had been awarded at the District conference.  He also announced that Cathy Gravel was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship.  CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH!!!!!!

BOARD MEETING DATE CHANGE:

The Board meeting will be on Thursday, May 20th, after our breakfast meeting.

Grace introduced today's speaker, Jeff Shmase.  Jeff had been a member of Peabody Rotary in the '90's when he worked at the Lynn Item.  He became a high school guidance counselor and now owns his own business, Eagle Educational Consulting, helping high school students with the college application process.  He gave a very interesting presentation about college costs and financial aid.  He told us that costs have gone up 437% since 1982.  Currently, tuition at 4-year public colleges is around $14,000/year; for private colleges is around $34,000/year.  Books cost over $100 each.  He also mentioned that not all students pay the same tuition.

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of

  interest to the club.

Reminders:

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.   Every nickel helps!!  Mel thanks Dick Berg for his generous contributions.

 ******************************

Happy Dollars:  This month's Sergeant-at-arms, Steve Padulsky, collected $70

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: Neither Gary Epstein nor Peggy Lyons picked the Ace of Diamonds, so neither won the $83.

There are two rules for success:  1.) Don’t tell all you know.

George Phillips , an elderly man, from Meridian, Mississippi, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?"

He said "No, but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me."

Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available."

George said, "Okay."

He hung up the phone and counted to 30.

Then he phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot them." and he hung up.

Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence, and caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the Policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member.  It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter.  That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.

LET'S BECOME A 100% SUSTAINING MEMBER CLUB!!

THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:

1. IS IT THE TRUTH?   2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?   3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP?   4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

Please keep this in mind!
