President Cathy handed out certificates to those who missed our installation dinner. She gave a reminder to those who have registered for the June 30th District Installation Dinner.
President Cathy then awarded Bob Wood and Ralph Reynard (in absentia) their Paul Harris Fellowship Pins PLUS 6 each!! To members who are unaware how and why Paul Harris Fellowships (PHF's) are awarded, each PHF represents a donation to the Rotary Foundation of $1,000 in a Rotary year. These donations come in many forms. Outright checks written by a Rotarian. Club contributions. Sustaining memberships ($100 per year). Circle of Gold ($250 per year). If a Rotarian donates $1,000, that can be used to award a PHF to another individual, even a non-Rotarian, if the donor so chooses.
P-E Martha announced that the Golf tournament will once again be a tri-joint affair with the Peabody Chamber of Commerce and the Peabody City Council. Bob Clattenburg will be the Rotary Chair and will need EVERYONE'S help. President Cathy then mentioned that she and P-E Martha will be serving at Citizens For Adequate Housing on July 8th, rather than July 1st. By then they'll be Past President Cathy and President Martha. Herb will be making up the 2010-2011 schedule. If anyone has particular dates (first Thursday of each month) that are not good, please let him know right away. Once the schedule is configured, any changes must be made by the Rotarian who wants the change. Mel reported that former Rotarian Arthur Wood had passed away. President Cathy thanked Mel for being at the meetings early EVERY WEEK to set up and collect raffle donations (well, they're donations for those of us who never win). His efforts are greatly appreciated by all.
Steve S presented the club with the Williamsburg, VA, banner. He had made up there while on vacation. And President Cathy presented our visiting Rotarian with our club's banner.
Grace introduced today's speaker, Iris Weaver, a spiritual herbalist, who spoke about environmental pollution--a timely discussion considering the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The focus was on using natural products for cleaning and maintaining one's body as well as for dishes, laundry and household use. Regular commercial products have chemicals in them that go down our drains and cause environmental pollution. Among several useful hints, Iris suggested using vinegar and baking soda to unclog clogged drains. And vinegar and water for cleaning. Besides being environmentally friendly, these are inexpensive alternatives to commercial products. And they are non-toxic, should a little tyke ingest them. Herb mentioned that in the early '70's Iris had spoken with his father, Ben Charles Harris, herbalist and prolific book writer. (Ed.'s note: I suspect that many of Iris's suggestions can be found in Kitchen Tricks, by my late Dad.) After speaking with him, Iris chose her life work. Herb also said that Iris helped him with his herb garden.

Happy Dollars: In his final act in the role of Dr. Doom, Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky collected $97.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

50-50 Raffle: Mel picked the Seven of Hearts to be the new winning card after Gary won the pot last week. Neither Steve P nor Gary picked the Seven of Hearts so no-one won the magnificent sum of $20.00.
After the raffle drawing, President Cathy rang the bell for the final time as Club President. What a smile--do you think she's happy? THANK YOU, PRESIDENT CATHY FOR LEADING OUR CLUB THROUGH A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR!!
*******************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! He thanks former member and President Dick Berg and the North Shore Bank for their generous contributions.

NEXT MEETINGS:
July 1, 2010: First day of President Martha's year.
Please make every effort to attend your Rotary meetings. The more members we have each week, the better we look to potential members--and to our visitors and speakers.
Thank you!
UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES:
July 1, 2010: First day of President Martha's year.
Three guys go in for a job interview, all at the same office.
The first one goes in for his interview and the interviewer says, "What's the first thing you see when you look at me?" The guy says, "That's not too hard, you've got no ears." The interviewer says, "That's it, get out, you'll never be seen around here again."
The second man takes his turn and is asked the same question. The applicant replies, "Uh, you've got no ears." The interviewer throws the guy out, cursing and yelling that he'll never get a job with his company. As he is leaving, the second guy warns the third guy, "Listen man, whatever you do, don't say he hasn't got any ears. He's so touchy with the ear thing." "Okay," said man #3 on his way into the office.
Once inside he is told, "Name the first thing you notice when you look at me."
The guy answers, "That's easy, you wear contacts."
The interviewer was flabbergasted, "How on earth did you know that, son?"
"What? Are you stupid? You can't wear glasses, you've got no ears!"
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
