Meeting notes

Today's visiting Rotarians: Tony Thompson, Northeast Austin, Texas.

Guests:  Dave Gravel. President Cathy's hubby.

President Cathy mentioned that the Boston club is celebrating its 100th birthday on July 18th.  Rotary International President John Kenney will be the guest speaker.  District PR Chair, Alan Michel reminded the club that Boston is the seventh oldest Rotary club--a high distinction to be one of the top ten!

     *

President Cathy reported that there was another meeting of the golf committee.  A reminder that the tournament is on September 14th and golfers, sponsors and advertisers are needed.  Julie Erickson volunteered to work on the committee.  The next meeting will be on Tuesday at 9:00AM.  Mel will have the Entertainment Books (still a bargain at $25) in August.

*

Secretary Gary Epstein reminded members of Rotary's attendance requirements.  Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up.  However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up.  Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings.  Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

Grace introduced our guest speaker, Alan Michel, a member of Andover Rotary and the District Publict Relations Chair.  He talked to us about the S.T.O.P. (Stop Teasing Other People) that the Andover club has instituted to fight bullying in schools.  The purpose of the program is to raise awareness of the problem, talk about it and to change behavior--not just to deliver information.  It's a collaboration between parents, teachers, administrators, high school community groups and Rotary.  The cost to set the program up is $3,000, plus an additional $1,000 for books.  Once set up, though, the ongoing cost is minimal.  And because of this program, Andover is staring an Early Act group.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:  On August 7th, at 4:30PM, the entire membership will present the first meal at Inn Transition, 42 Washington Street, so everyone will learn the procedure.  We'll continue on the first Friday every month.  And as a "heads up", we'll all have to do this volunteer work more frequently.  We'll be feeding close to, if not over, 50 people, so rather than only three volunteers per month, it will take more.  (Another good reason to get more members into our club!!)   President Cathy will visit CAH next week to determine exactly what our participation will be and how many of us will be required each month.

**********************************************

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of

  interest to the club.

*******************************************************

Reminders:

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.   Every nickel helps!!  Mel thanks Metro Credit Union and Vanessa for their generous contributions.

 ******************************

Happy Dollars:  This month's Sergeant-at-arms, Steve Padulsky, collected $75

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: Neither Loring nor Herb picked the Ace of Diamonds, so neither won the $180.

The Boston Symphony was performing Beethoven's Ninth. In the piece, there's a long passage about 20 minutes during which the bass violinists have nothing to do. Rather than sit around the whole time looking stupid, some bassists decided to sneak offstage and go to the tavern next door for a quick one.

After slamming several beers in quick succession, one of them looked at his watch. "Hey! We need to get back!"

"No need to panic," said a fellow bassist, "I thought we might need some extra time, so I tied the last few pages of the conductor's score together with string. It'll take him a few minutes to get it untangled."

A few moments later they staggered back to the concert hall and took their places in the orchestra. About this time, a member of the audience noticed the conductor seemed a bit edgy and said as much to her companion.

"Well, of course," said her companion, "Don't you see? It's the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the bassists are loaded."

It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member.  It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter.  That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.

LET'S BECOME A 100% SUSTAINING MEMBER CLUB!!

THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:

1. IS IT THE TRUTH?   2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?   3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP?   4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

Please keep this in mind!
