It was apparent that Gary Epstein hadn't read last week's RippleSo President Steve Morad fined him.  Let that be a lesson and reminder to all members.  Or bring plenty of cash to each meeting.  If it's near your birthday or your spouse's or your wedding anniversary, be prepared to pay for it, as Jeff Doherty found out.  Yesterday was his birthday.

 That's how the meeting began--a forerunner to the rest of the year under President Steve.  He wants to have every meeting planned out, fluid and meaningful.  But most of all, a lot of fun!!  He'll have a 3-month rolling calendar so we all know what's ahead.  This will also be updated on the Club calendar page of this website.  Board meetings will be at 5:00PM on the last Monday each month.  The prior meeting will be a Club Business meeting--each committee chair will report.  PP Grace Martins is the Program Chair.  But all club members are part of the Program committee.  Each month teams of two will be responsible for the programs.  President Steve suggested that one meeting should be a classification speech--even for long-term members; one the business meeting; one about Rotary--District speaker, perhaps; and one a general topic speaker.  And because a large part of Rotary is Fellowship, President Steve wants to have a Fellowship program each month--like the potential barbecue at someone's house.

There was a very animated discussion about changing to a breakfast meeting.  Rather than just try it out to see if it will attract more potential members, President Steve will take a vote next week to permanently change--or not.  As of now, the only option for breakfast is at the Marriott.  But we have to change to Thursday morning (7:15 to 8:30) and the charge will be $20.  I hope there's lobster, steak, mimosas and other delicacies for that price!  If anyone can find a location that won't soak us as much, please check it out.  PLEASE BE SURE TO ATTEND THIS CRUCIAL MEETING ON JULY 29TH.  Our club's future is at stake.  During the discussion, a couple of members said they knew of folks who might consider joining if we had breakfast meeting. (Might they also consider it if we continue with luncheons?)  And there were at least four members who will not be able to make breakfast meetings and will leave the club.

We'll be selling Penny Candy at the International Festival.  Can one still buy candy for a penny? President Steve suggested that we sell bags for the kids (or adults) to fill with candy for a price yet-to-be-determined.

A:  According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest continuously operated ballpark in the world is Fuller Field in Clinton, Massachusetts. Clinton is a small town located 35 miles west of Fenway Park in Boston, the oldest Major League Baseball ballpark. Fuller Field has been in operation continuously since 1878.

We received a Thank You letter from The Red Cross for our donation for the Dearborn of Highland Apartment fire victims.  And we also received information about Marblehead Rotary's Great Race, a water event on August 9th.

The meeting of August 5th will be an evening meeting at Sugar Cane, downtown Peabody, as the Red Carpet will be rolled, spotlights out, limos rolling in, stars galore as the World Premiere of the Cable TV show, starring President Steve and PP Grace, will be premiered.

SAVE THE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 17TH, from 3:00 TO 8:00PM.  This is the date of the District's Membership and Foundation Forum at the Sheraton Ferncroft.  This is where all Rotarians will learn more about how Rotary functions.  And with this knowledge and tips from the Membership segment, we'll better be able to attract and retain more members.  Please make every effort to attend.

Herb Harris told the assemblage that Larry Lucchino had been an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1973-4.  NELink (September 26-27) is trying to get him to speak.  The snag may be that the Red Sox are playing the Evil Empire (aka the Yankees) that weekend.  For those who don't read the Rotarian (but you should!!), this month's issue tells us that the Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the LARGEST PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN THE WORLD!!  By the way, the other locally well-known person who had been an Ambassadorial Scholar is former Lt. Governor Kerry Healy.

*

Would you like to help Mel Babner deliver food for the Citizens For Adequate Housing families, temporarily housed in Salem?  Anyone who would like to help Mel, please contact him.

*

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel Babner.  Every nickel helps!!  Mel Thanks Dick Berg for his generous contribution.

There must be a ton of empty beer cans and bottles from July 4th weekend and all summer--please give them to Mel.

*

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

 *

Happy Dollars:  Sergeant-at-arms Jeff Doherty collected $62.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

*

50-50 Raffle:  The pool was $154.  Neither Mike Tallo nor Loring Merrow picked the Queen of Spades.

A teacher asks her students if they're Yankees fans. All of the hands go up except for one student. (This must have happened in New York.)

"Okay, Bobby. What team are you a fan of?"

"The Red Sox."

"Why's that?"

"Well, my parents are both Red Sox fans, so I'm a Red Sox fan too."

"That's not a good answer, Bobby. If your parents were both morons, would you be a moron too?"

"No, that would make me a Yankees fan!"
