President Martha wished Peggy P Happy Birthday, in absentia.
She then went onto Committee Reports:
Membership: In Steve S's absence, Cathy said that Steve was producing an updated brochure which he was to get to Cathy. She also mentioned that on August 26th,to honor Rotary's Membership and Extension month, our meeting will be a membership brainstorming session. President Martha then added that in September we'll have a formal Membership meeting with prospective member guests.
Foundation: Peggy P was not in attendance, so no report.
Media: Herb thanked all who responded to help with the website. Bob W will be the Webmaster, a position he no longer holds for the District. He did a great job with the site and the District's e-newsletter! Brian, Loring and Steve M also joined the committee, along with "right arm" Vanessa. Hopefully in the near future, the website will be updated. Please notify any of the committee with your recommendations and suggestions for improvement.
Program: Grace said that she has been working on some programs. One meeting a month will be a classification speech, beginning on August 12th with John M.
Golf: President Martha, in Bob C's absence reported that she, Bob and Peggy P had met. No update yet, but she urged everyone to start soliciting golfers (we need 144!), sponsors, advertizers and raffle/auction donations. Here's the link to the Peabody Chamber of Commerce's website with the flyer: http://secure.chambermaster.com/FCKeditor/UserFiles/chambers/340/File/Golf%202010.pdf
International Festival: Peggy L has a call into the pie supplier. In the next couple of weeks, she'll have a volunteer sign-up sheet for the September 12th (Sunday) event. President Martha reminded us that the City's International Festival Committee wants to go green. We will be using biodegradable plates for the pie slices. They will be generously donated by the supplier, Arrow.
Literacy: Cathy, Steve P and President Martha went to the Welch School for the Library's Free Lunch Program. They gave out the 28 remaining bike helmets, along with coloring books. The grant is being written for the NE ARC pottery studio. Cathy said that the joint (with PEC) raffle calendar is coming along. Ad deadline is August 6th. Warren Waugh has given a $5,000 sponsorship! It's now a 16-month calendar. Lots of opportunities to advertise--and to win prizes! Ads begin at $125 for 1/4 page.
Taste of The North Shore: Vanessa will be firming up details with the Danversport Yacht Club. The tentative date will be March 22nd, possibly the 29th.
President Martha reminded us that the next Board Meeting will be at the Library on WEDNESDAY, August 18th. ALL members are welcome. President Martha said that Gary will be holding fireside chats with our newest members. She also mentioned that we will be having an evening of fellowship at Vanessa's hiusband's restaurant, Cap's On The Water, in Salem, on August 19th.
Grace introduced our guest speaker, Danyela Schanton, who owns the local Wizard Language School franchise on Main Street in Peabody. AN attorney by training, she moved to Peabody from Brazil in 2001, and subsequently opened Wizard. Danyela told us that this is much more than just a language school. Besides teaching Spanish, Italian, Portugese and English, there are also classes in computers, photography, citizenship, and GED.
Mel reminds us that the 2011 Entertainment Books will be available in August. He has a supply of 2010 books, which are good through October. Those will be given FREE to those purchasing the 2011 books ($30.00 each) until supplies run out.
******************************
Happy Dollars: Acting Sergeant-at-arms Steve P collected $67.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Gary nor Brian picked the Seven of Hearts so no-one won the $92.00. And neither picked the $50 Joker.
*******************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! He thanks former member and President Dick Berg,Bob C and Herb for their generous contributions.

UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES:
August 18, 2010: Board Meeting at Peabody Institute Library
One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to accumulate the building materials for his home.
She read, "...And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said, 'Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?'"
The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that man said?"
One little boy raised his hand and said, "I think he said 'Holy moley! A talking pig!'"
The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
