Editor's note:  This is the last edition of The Ripple that I'll be writing/editing until May.  Because I cannot make morning meetings for the next 12 weeks, I'll be on a leave of absence from the club.  When I return, I'm hoping to revamp the club's website--WITH YOUR HELP!!  Please check out each page and make recommendations for changes.  There's a lot of old material there that should be removed or updated.  E-mail me (h_harris@smallbizpros.com) with your recommendations.

Our thoughts for a speedy recovery for Peggy Pedro who fell on the ice on Wednesday and broke her collarbone.

President Steve reminded us of our sponsorship of the Peabody Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours to be held on Wednesday, February 11th, from 5:30PM to 7:30PM at the Peabody Marriott, who will be co-sponsoring the event with our club.  THERE WILL BE NO MEETING THE NEXT MORNING, FEBRUARY 12TH.  So be sure to attend this event!!

*****************************

The World Peace and Understanding Dinner will be on February 5th.  So far, eleven Peabody Rotarians will be going.  That's a great representation of our club!!  Let President Steve know if you'll be attending.

***********************************

President Steve mentioned that the Polio Plus campaign will be ending soon.  The District's goal with the pillowcase collections is $1,000 per club.  So far we've collected over $700.  The next 2 weeks' of Happy Dollars will be added, so we should approach or exceed $900.  Considering the size of our club, that's fantastic!  Perhaps we can all dig deep and exceed the $1,000 goal.  That's about $50 per member.  If an 80-member club does that, they'd collect $4,000.

*****************************

President Steve reminded us that we need to find a new Host family for our exchange student from Colombia, Martin.  Apparently, the State Department says that exchange students must stay at more than one family during their time in the US.  The Host family does not necessarily have to be a Rotarian family, so ask your friends and neighbors.  Cathy Gravel is also looking for members to help by inviting Martin to join them on the weekends.  Anyone who helps--whether as a host family or as an hour sponsor--must be CORI'd--all members of the family who are at least 18 years old.

*****************************

Our District Simplified Grant project will be held on Saturday, April 25th.  It will be a Bike Safety Day.  We'll be giving out 250 bike helmets and Guard-a-kid will be preparing identification kits and CD's for all children.  There also will be bike safety training.  Be sure to tell President Steve that you'll be there!  More details to come!

**********************************

President Steve asked everyone if they need Taste of the North Shore tickets.  When you sell tickets (and collect the money) be sure to give the stubs and payments to either Mike Tallo or Loring.  The Taste is less than 6 weeks away!!!!!  We need more restaurants (7 or 8 so far); talk it up!  There was talk about putting together an ad book--sell ads!!  We need raffle items!!!!!  The High School will sell tickets and receive a cut for the curtains at PVMHS.  COMMITTEE CHAIRS:  Have you contacted your volunteers for help?  VOLUNTEERS:  Ask your committee Chair what needs to be done!!!!!!

*******************************

Fred gave a District update:  Everyone should have received the District e-newsletter (hope you all read it!), edited and distibuted by our newest member, Bob Wood.   Fred said that Bob is a super Rotarian--very dedicated.  He founded the Georgetown Rotary Club.  Fred reminded us that the District Conference will be in May1st-2nd in Salem and much less costly than last year.  Fred mentioned that his wife, Rachel, just returned from Pakistan.  She went there to work on the Rotary Grant to build--or add onto--a girl's school near the border, where there was some war activity.  She could hear the fighting nearby.  Fred tried to join her there but the plane connections--or lack thereof--made it impossible.  He made it as far as Abu Dhabi.

******************************

The main event of the day was the induction of our newest Rotarians--Julie Erickson, who was sponsored by Steve Smith, and Cathleen Wardley, who was sponsored by President Steve.  WELCOME TO PEABODY ROTARY, Julie and Cathleen !!!!  All members should welcome them and sign their books--or be fined by next month's Sergeant-At-Arms.

***********************************

From Past Editions:

President Steve emphasized that every member has to sign up for at least one of the Taste Committees.  All members are technically members of every committee, but you need to sign onto committees for logistics' purposes.  Send an e-mail to President Steve -- you should reply to his recent e-mail.

  *****************************

President Steve reminded the club that in order to have a successful Taste of the North Shore, it will take a lot of work by all members of Peabody Rotary.  With 100% approval to go forward, he announced that we will go on with the Taste.  The following subcommittees (and chairs) were named:  Ticket Sales and records (Mike Tallo); Restaurants (Cathy Gravel)--7 have already signed up; Ad Book (Peggy Pedro); Auctions/Raffles (Scott Bronstein); Entertainment (Julie Erickson); Publicity (Steve Smith).  Contact the committee chair on whose committee you want to work.  But a reminder--we're all members of every committee.  But choose one on which you'll work a bit harder.  Mel has already sold some raffle tickets!!  How many have you sold?

President Steve emphasized that our meetings begin PROMPTLY at 7:30.  (Almost) Everyone voted to meet at this time, so there's no excuse to be late.

Cathy G is looking for a Scholarship Committee--Chair and members.  Word needs to be sent to the schools and applications to be reviewed with decisions to be made.  Tell Cathy of your interest.

Reminders:

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.  Every nickel helps!!  Mel Thanks Dick Berg and North Shore Bank for their generous contributions.

******************************

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

 ******************************

Happy Dollars:  This month's Sergeant-at-arms Steve Smith collected $70, helped by the younger members who didn't remember the Burma Shave ads.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: The pool was $10.00 (WOW!!!).  Neither Joanne nor Mike picked the NINE OF DIAMONDS or the $50 Joker.  But Mike won last week and donated the entire pot ($20) to the pillowcase.

All of his life, Len had heard stories of an amazing family tradition. It seems that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 21st birthday. On that day, they'd walk across the lake to the boat club for their first legal drink.

So, when Len's 21st birthday came around, he and his friend, Corky, took a boat out to the middle of the lake. Len stepped out of the boat and nearly drowned! Corky just managed to pull him to safety.

Furious and confused, Len went to see his grandmother.

"Grandma, it's my 21st birthday, so why can't I walk across the lake like my father, his father and his father before him?"

Granny looked Len straight in the eyes and said, "Because your father, grandfather and great- grandfather were born in January. You were born in July."
