President Cathy wished Fred a Happy February 1st Birthday, but didn't request a donation from him.  She reminded the members that we should all bring in our loose change and bills (small and large) next week for Polio Plus.  This will be the last week for collections.  So far about $600 has been collected toward our goal of $1,000.  A check will be presented at the World Peace and Understanding Dinner on February 9th at the Danversport Yacht Club  Be sure to let President Cathy know if you want to attend this excellent event.  And the members did a fantastic job donating $1,150 so far for Haiti relief.  It was voted that our donation will go to Partners In Health.  We will have a table by the Food Court at the North Shore Mall on Saturday and Sunday to collect for Haiti.  If you want to help, contact President Cathy.  Most likely, we'll continue to collect the following weekend, so several volunteers are needed.   Grace clarified that her trip to Nicaragua is NOT a religious mission, but a Rotary project.  She'll work with the local Rotary club in Grenada, Nicaragua to feed the children, plant a garden and work on public health.  The club voted to donate $1,000 for her trip.  And apparently she's not flying with Delta--she said that it's a lot cheaper to have 14 suitcases fly.  Martha reported that she and incoming District Secretary Peggy Pedro attended Pre-PETS.  They learned that funding in Rotary will change as grants will be more in the hands of the District and they are for six specific areas.  We will need to formulate a three-year strategic plan. And in order to receive District Grants, we must have two club members attend a grant-writing workshop.  Fred said that the GSE program will change next year.  It will probably go to a two week program, rather than the current four weeks.  The inbound team will be here for the month of May.  Our club will bid to host them on May 13th--and invite other clubs in our region.  If we do so, we will need to find activities for the team for rest of the day--and members to be with them.  Vanessa said that we have eight restaurants committed for the Taste of the North Shore.  She'll e-mail a list of potential participants to our members.  If anyone has contacts at any of those restaurants, they should let Vanessa know and follow-up.  Otherwise, Vanessa will make the call.  President Cathy said that Take a Bow will participate as will the Library Board of Trustees. KEEP SELLING TICKETS!!!!!!!!!

President Cathy reminds Bob Wood and Ann Spac-Danjou that they are the CAH team on February 4th.  Too bad they left the meeting early and didn't hear her reminder. However. Grace is taking Bob's place this month.

Happy Dollars:  Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky (aka Dr. Doom) collected $100.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: Neither Mel nor Herb picked the Seven of Clubs so no-one won the $83.50.  But Mel did pick the Joker and won $50!!

       *******************************

Reminders:

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of

  interest to the club.

        *************************

Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements.  Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up.  However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up.  Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings.  Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

   *************************

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.  Every nickel helps!!

Income tax returns are the most imaginative fiction being written today.    Herman Wouk

**************************

The owner of a small deli was being questioned by the IRS about his tax return. He had reported a net profit of $80,000 for the year.

"Why don't you people leave me alone?" the deli owner said.
"I work like a dog, everyone in my family helps out, the place is only closed three days a year. And you want to know how I made $80,000?"

"It's not your income that bothers us," the agent said. "It's these deductions. You listed six trips to Bermuda for you and your wife."

"Oh, that," the owner said smiling. "I forgot to tell you - we also deliver."

                 *****************************************************

It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member.  It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter.  That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.

LET'S BECOME A 100% SUSTAINING MEMBER CLUB!!

THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:

1. IS IT THE TRUTH?

2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?

3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP?

4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

Please keep this in mind!
