****************************************
Today's meeting was our monthly business meeting. President Cathy handed out a detailed agenda. Neither Secretary Gary nor Treasurer Loring was in attendance so there was not a Secretary's nor a Treasurer's report presented. Peggy Pedro, as Foundation Committee Chair, reported that the Pennies for Polio had collected $551.50 so far. That total includes money collected at the branches of North Shore Bank as well as the contributions of members. Hopefully we'll get close to the $1,000 goal before members are asked to help reach that goal. Membership Chair Steve Smith distributed flyers to all. He asks that every member use them when speaking with prospective members. Although some of the quality of his product would be reduced a little, the flyers can be reproduced. In the absence of Literacy Chair PE Martha Holden, President Cathy reported that the S.T.O.P. program has started at the Carroll School. Program Chair Grace was not in attendance,so there was no report. Scholarship Chair Peggy Lyons said that the new scholarship application should be on the website. (Ed.'s note: It is.) Neither PP Steve nor Vanessa was at the meeting so we didn't get an update on the Taste of the North Shore.
President Cathy thanked Mel for his continued efforts with the Entertainment Book and Bottles and Cans. She reminded us that we have until February 9th to reach our Polio Plus goal of $1,000. Everyone should be bringing in their loose change and bills every week.
Bob Clattenburg and PE Martha served the folks at Citizens For Adequate Housing. Bob said that they fed more than usual this month (around 13 before Bob and Martha left) and all were extremely grateful. There was a question about a family picking up furniture from the home of Bob Wood's parents. President Cathy said that she'd speak with Nichole or Betsy at CAH. Because no-one volunteered to attend the RYLA meeting last week, President Cathy said that we will take a one year hiatus from the program. There have been no requests for donations so far this year. The slate of 2010-2011 Officers and Directors was approved. President Cathy received an e-mail from DG Ingrid with the reminder that this is Rotary Awareness Month. She distributed the e-mail attachment with suggestions for club projects. And she reminded the members of several upcoming events--the February 9th World Peace & Understanding Dinner, PE Martha's Pre-PETS meeting and PETS, and the April 14th District Assembly.
Jeff wanted to know what projects other clubs do. Peggy Pedro mentioned several projects that her clubs, as Assistant District Governor, have done or are planning. Herb suggested that everyone make-up at other clubs to steal ideas. Remember--it's not a bad thing: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Perhaps we can also get an idea of what classification of members they have that we don't. And we also want to know what town/city officials are members of our neighboring clubs. President Cathy wants to meet with the Mayor and his department heads and this information would be useful ammunition. A discussion then followed as to how our club could help with the Haiti Earthquake. Members should plan to make a commitment next week once a decision has been reached.
******************************
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky collected $42 plus Jeff's IOU.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither John Meakin (who, as guest, chose his own ticket) nor Ann SpaK-Danjou picked the Seven of Clubs so no-one won the $36.00.
*******************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel thanks President Cathy for her generous contributions.

A minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.
Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances."
During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."
At that moment, the substitute organist played, "The Star Spangled Banner."
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
