President Martha wished Happy Birthdays to Jesse, who was with Phish this week, Vanessa and Nick Pereira, Megan's husband. She then announced that the date of the District's Polio Plunge is February 12th in Gloucester.  She and Peggy P have volunteered to represent the club.  Any other brave souls?  President Martha and Peggy would really like some encouragement, so plan to cheer them on. The Eat Out to End Polio is another District-wide event and is slated for Tuesday, January 18th.  We hope Carrabba's will support this fundraiser.  A portion of all receipts that night are to go to help ending polio.  President Martha reminded us about the special Membership Meeting on January 20th which will feature Mayor Bonfanti and the presentation to Bob Wood of his Paul Harris Plus 7 Fellowship.  She asked that everyone decide on at least one prospective member to invite.  She has invitations for you to mail.  She said that she had a couple of prospective members to invite and that Herb will invite Scott Frasca, of Making a Difference In Peabody Foundation, and Bill Smith, Editor of the Peabody Weekly News. We'll have a full $20 breakfast that morning.  She reminded us about the January 22nd day of fun 'n' games painting the NorthEast ARC Pottery Studio.

Next week, Vanessa will begin to follow up with the restaurants who have been invited to participate in the Taste of the North Shore. Also, every member will be asked to participate in at least one of the subcommittees.  Apart from the Taste, she is exploring the purchase of Peabody Rotary T-Shirts and Polo shirts for members to purchase and wear at our events.

This morning's main event was the truly fascinating tale of "Chuck and Martha's Alaska 2010".  President Martha and Chuck went to Alaska in July for their 25th wedding anniversary. They made a great PowerPoint presentation with some magnificent pictures.  And as we all know, it's usually a lot better in person than what these pictures showed.  This recap of their presentation is very brief and misses a lot--both content and President Martha's and Chuck's passion.  They went with their daughters and their friends from Maine and all are still speaking to each other, as far as we know.  They began in Fairbanks on July 31st, where it was 85 degrees at 10:00PM with the sun still shining.  A main thought that prevailed through the presentation was that they saw and ate a lot of salmon.  Think of Bubba Gump and shrimp--now change that to Martha and Chuck and salmon.  They took a riverboat cruise along the Chena River, visited the late Susan Butcher's dogsled kennels, saw the oil pipeline--Chuck wanted to stay there the entire time, were awed by Denali (pictured on the left), stayed at the Kantishna Roadhouse, which is open for only about eight weeks before the snows begin around Labor Day and end after about 800 inches.  They saw fishing boats galore doing their thing right in the harbor.  After a trip by bus through a railroad tunnel to Whittier, they were on another boat cruise (50 passengers, not one of the luxury liners) through the glaciers in Prince William Sound.  They saw sea lions, whales, seals and other wildlife, as well as the glaciers crashing down.  They also did some white water rafting and a bit of hiking.  Quite an adventure!!

BOARD MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 12TH, 5:30, AT SUGAR CANE.

       *******************************

Reminders:

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

        *************************

Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements.  Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up.  However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up.  Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings.  Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

   *************************

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.  Every nickel helps!!

Jenna was taking an afternoon nap on New Year's Eve before the festivities. After she woke up, she confided to Max, her husband, 'I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a New Year's present. What do you think it all means?'

'Aha, you'll know tonight,' answered Max smiling broadly.

At midnight , as the New Year was chiming, Max approached Jenna and handed her small package. Delighted and excited she opened it quickly. There in her hand rested a book entitled: 'The meaning of dreams'.
