President Cathy announced recent changes to our Board of Directors:
Martha Holden is now President Elect and will be our President from July 1, 2010 to June 30th, 2011. Succeeding her will be our new Vice President, Vanessa Silviera. Congratulations to both and thank you for agreeing to take on that responsibility!! We need to formally present the District with our Slate of Officers for the 2010-2011 year. Gary Epstein will chair the Nominating Committee. If you want to assist him on the committee, e-mail him.
AN IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR CITIZENS FOR ADEQUATE HOUSING MEALS: Fatima is getting married and closing her shop. (Word out is that someone else will be in her location soon.) We are now obtaining our meals at Santoro's, at 41 Main Street in Peabody. This month's meal will be pot roast--Steve Smith was to pick up the meal and Peggy Lyons the veggies and cookies this evening.
On December 17th, we will NOT have a breakfast meeting. Instead, we will have our Holiday Fellowship Social, including a special induction of Ann Spac-Danjou as our newest member. Significant others are encouraged to attend. The tentative time is from 5:30 to 7:30. Details to follow.
Steve Smith, President Cathy and her employee, Dan, all volunteered to judge the DECA competition at the Crowne Plaza Danvers on December 16th.
Peabody Rotary will fill in one spot a week as guest reader at one of the elementary schools. One member each week will read. And a reminder that Anton's Cleaners is still collecting coats which they'll clean and then donate to needy folks.
PP (no longer PPE) Steve gave an update on the Taste of the North Shore. He has the tickets--both $100 raffle and $35 admission--to give to each member. If you haven't received your tickets yet, make arrangements with PP Steve to get them. Also, let him know which committee(s) you will work on--before he assigns it to you. The committees are: Restaurant, Ad Book, Auction and Tickets. There will be a short session for the Taste after each of our meetings for updates and assignments. We'd guess that if you're not at the meeting, you'll be assigned a job. So be sure to attend every meeting so you can choose what to do.
President Cathy reminded everyone about Pennies For Polio. Everyone should be bringing in their loose change and bills every week.
This is not a note about our meeting, but Mel told me that in 1947 (he said he was in high school then) Peabody Rotary, under club President Dr. Hugh O'Rourke, donated essentials to two cities in Denmark. They were having difficulties recovering from World War II. Mel also reminds us that there are only THREE WEEKS REMAINING to sell the Entertainment Books!
Grace introduced our guest speaker, Bob Ryan, who, along with his nephew Dave Wood, own Ryan & Wood Inc., Distilleries in Gloucester. He explained the tedious, two and a half year process of obtaining all the permits and approvals--Federal, state and local--before they could even begin the distilling process. His talk was quite fascinating as he explained what makes R&W different from other vodkas, gins and soon--rums. His entire extended family is involved--from distilling to marketing to delivery. They distribute in the smaller shops first, then they work on getting larger accounts. Several Peabody locations carry their products. As interesting as the presentation was, Grace was really disappointed that there were no samples.
******************************
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky collected $66.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Bob Clattenburg picked the Queen of Hearts and won the $113.50!!!
Additional raffles, coutesey of our speaker, Bob Ryan of Ryan and Wood Distilleries: Bottle of Vodka: Steve Padulsky; Bottle of Gin: Peggy Pedro
*******************************
Reminders:
************************
Mel reminds us to keep selling the Entertainment Books. He asks that you bring the sales money each week to the meeting. ONLY THREE MORE WEEKS--SELL, SELL, SELL!!
************************
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel thanks President Cathy for her generous contributions.
