President Steve wished Loring a Happy Birthday. Neither Cathy nor Gary was at the meeting to report on Haven From Hunger. But Jessika said that she had seen Gary over the weekend and was told that they served a bit over 30 individuals. President Steve reminded everyone to bring in their wrapped Yankee Swap gift ($15) next week. He also reminded us that there will be NO MEETING the following week, December 29th. All members had responded to President Steve about the evening of Fellowship at Bob and Susan Wood's house on December 30th. If anyone's plans change be sure to let President Steve know. He'll send out directions to the Woods' house.
President Steve passed around a flyer for the second annual Polio Plunge to be held on Saturday, February 11th. And he reminded us (via another flyer) of the District Conference to be held June 1st-3rd in Mystic CT.
Vanessa distributed Taste of The North Shore tickets, giving 10 each of the raffle and general admission tickets to all present.
Mel reported that the club made $750 from selling Entertainment Books and thanked all who sold and purchased books.
Martha said that there will be a dedication of the Habitat For Humanity home that club members worked on. It will be this coming Sunday at 1:30PM.
Brian asked if we'd be interested in having Tom Zappala back to discuss his book on the middleweight boxer Tony DiMarco, the subject of another book by Tom. Tony would also come to the meeting. It was agreed that it would be a good idea. Brian will also talk with Tom about his radio show, perhaps to plug the Taste of the North Shore.
President Steve inducted the newest Peabody Rotarian, Sue Trahant. Absent from the picture is Sue's sponsor, Herb.
Herb then made his reclassification presentation. He and Judi have been married for 23 years and live in West Peabody with Brady. Herb's daughter, Jill, son-in-law, Mike, and granddaughter, Olivia live in East Greenwich, RI. Jill is an award winning interior designer. Judi's son, Jonathan, has been in IT at Varian in Gloucester for many years. Varian was recently taken over by Applied Materials. Herb and Judi love all of the local professional teams--Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. They've traveled quite a bit around the country, as well as Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Bermuda, Italy, France and London. Whenever possible, they've gone to Red Sox and Celtics (and non-local team) games in other venues around the country. Herb has become a "foodie". He loves to cook--and experiment--and barbecue. He uses herbs from his herb garden--something his late Dad, an herbalist and author of many books on herbs, would be proud to see. Herb even spent a weekend at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, to hone his kitchen and grilling techniques. Herb is a blues freak--the satellite radio blues station is always on in his office. He was born and raised in Worcester and talked about gourmet food there (at Greasy's and McDonald's). Drafted in 1968, he chose to enlist in the Air Force for a better chance of survival. After basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, he went for training at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. It was at the bus station there that he was repulsed by the signs over the public bubblers that said "Whites Only" and "Colored". He was then stationed in Wakkani, the northernmost point in Japan. He remembered fondly his visits to Tokyo, the Osaka World's Fair, Kyoto, Kamakura and the tiny island of Rishiri. Then he was stationed at Nellis AFB, just outside Las Vegas, where he watched the Thunderbirds train. In Japan, he was a spy (monitored Russian radar). At Nellis, he was an administrative specialist. After the Air Force, he worked at Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury. Once he got engaged, he went to work in banking for more stable hours. Over 17 years in banking, he was a branch manager and then regional manager overseeing 6 branches. He loved helping businesses and individuals, granting loans as well as financial advice. But when banks stopped helping in the late 80's because of the bad economy, he bought his accounting franchise, Padgett Business Services. He's been helping the owners of small businesses for 21 years by doing their monthly accounting and meeting with them every month to talk in English about their results. He gives his clients peace of mind as well as files and pays their sales, meals and payroll taxes in a timely manner. He also does tax returns for individuals, as well as businesses that don't meet with him every month. Herb has been President of the local unit of the American Cancer Society, Peabody Chamber of Commerce and North Shore Business Forum. He has perfect attendance in Peabody Rotary for 13+ years, and was President in 2003-4. He had been the District's Outbound Ambassadorial Scholar coordinator for a few years. He had also been a Rotarian in Watertown in the '70's when he was in banking.

Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms John collected $77.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
*********************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither John nor Jeff picked the Jack of Spades--or the $50 Joker. So the $26 pot is safe for now.
********************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Brian Cassidy, asks that you tell him of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
**********************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
**********************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Once again, Mel thanks former Peabody Rotary Club member and Past President Dick Berg for his generous contributions.
