President Steve began the business meeting speaking of next week's Yankee Swap (more below).
He mentioned that the Board discussed that they will review how expenditures are made for members attending Rotary functions--guidelines will be set.
Grace has been doing a great job with the speakers. But we won't have speakers who are trying to promote their businesses--particularly if a member also is in the same business.
If you want to help Cathy with the details of the program for which we received the District Simplified Grant, she's looking for volunteers. We'll all be volunteers the day the program happens in May.
President Steve reported that the club will sponsor a Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours in February.
He announced the membership resignation of Tom Rowen.
On Thursday evening, President Steve was to present a $5,000 check to the City Council as their share of the golf tournament net proceeds.
The following donations have been approved: Y-It-Matters, $3,000; Peabody United--No Place For Hate, $500; Nichole's clothing and toy shipping cost, $500; Gloucester road race (part of which is in Peabody), $150; renewed our membership in the Peabody Chamber of Commerce.
Jeff Doherty is stepping down as Sergeant-At-Arms. Beginning in January, one member will take over the duties on a monthly basis. The S-A-A who raises the most money will win a prize at our annual dinner. Steve Smith will cover January and Grace will cover February. If you want to volunteer for a month (March-June) let President Steve know.
President Steve emphasized that our meetings begin PROMPTLY at 7:30. (Almost) Everyone voted to meet at this time, so there's no excuse to be late.
Cathy and Dave Gravel will host our first annual resumed Holiday party on December 29th. They are generously providing all the food and drink!! Thank you so much, Cathy and Dave! Cathy will e-mail details and directions.
Our meeting of December 18th will be our annual Yankee swap. Bring a wrapped gift--real or gag--but no more than $20 value. No need to mark "to" or "from". If you feel generous, you might want to bring a second gift should we have visitors. And for those members who forget--of course they'll have to pay to participate.
President Steve reviewed the various Taste of the North Shore Committees and respective volunteers: Tickets: Mike Tallo and Loring -- they will determine how to run the raffle drawings--any suggestions? Restaurants: Cathy & Grace -- there are 7 or 8 so far. 14-15 to go!! Ad Book: Peggy Pedro and the entire club--President Steve recommended that the club spend a day together and make phone calls for a couple of hours for sales of ads; Publicity: Steve Smith and Herb -- will use benefits of North Shore Chamber membership; Entertainment: Julie Erickson -- the DJ has confirmed.
President Steve read a Salem News article telling about a group of Peabody High School students trying to raise $20,000 for new stage curtains. It was suggested that we ask them to sell Taste raffle tickets and they'd get to keep half. It was eventually decided to give them $25 for each ticket sold. Cathy will make the contacts and Rudy will control the tickets.
*****************************
Gary Epstein reported that he, Jeff Doherty and Julie Erickson served 35 folks at Haven From Hunger. They ran out of pork (Don't you wish the government would do that?) so there were no seconds. Time to re-think the amount we order from Fatima's.
*****************************
Cathy reported that her exchange student is doing very well--he received an excellent report card, his art is still on display at the Library and he's on the indoor track team.
***********************************
Mel Babner reminds everyone to sell the Entertainment Books. So far 120 have been sold. We need to sell 240!!
*****************************
DGN Steve May presented Grace with a check for her trip to Nicaragua. Gayle followed suit.
******************************
From Past Editions:
President Steve emphasized that every member has to sign up for at least one of the Taste Committees. All members are technically members of every committee, but you need to sign onto committees for logistics' purposes. Send an e-mail to President Steve -- you should reply to his recent e-mail.
*****************************
President Steve reminded the club that in order to have a successful Taste of the North Shore, it will take a lot of work by all members of Peabody Rotary. With 100% approval to go forward, he announced that we will go on with the Taste. The following subcommittees (and chairs) were named: Ticket Sales and records (Mike Tallo); Restaurants (Cathy Gravel)--7 have already signed up; Ad Book (Peggy Pedro); Auctions/Raffles (Scott Bronstein); Entertainment (Julie Erickson); Publicity (Steve Smith). Contact the committee chair on whose committee you want to work. But a reminder--we're all members of every committee. But choose one on which you'll work a bit harder. Mel has already sold some raffle tickets!! How many have you sold?
Reminders:
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel Thanks Herb for his generous contributions.
******************************
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
******************************
Happy Dollars: Acting Sergeant-at-arms Herb Harris collected $59. This included everyone singing Happy Birthday to Cathy Gravel.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: The pool was $194.50. Someone forgot to buy raffle tickets again, so there was no raffle this week. No-one picked the KING OF CLUBS or the $50 Joker.
