If you cannot answer the question at our meeting next week, or by e-mail if you don't attend next week, be prepared to pay the consequences. Once again this week, President Steve forgot to ask the question from last week's Ripple. He said that he'd pay the fines that he would have collected had he asked the question.
Meeting notes
Today's visiting Rotarians: None.

Today's Breakfast: Same as last week.
President Steve reminded everyone about the District Membership/Foundation Conference to be held on September 17th. Grace Martins and her GSE team will be making a presentation there. So far, seven members have said that they need to learn more about Rotary so they'll be there. That's great!! (Ed.: Unless you know everything about obtaining and retaining members and how Rotary spends your donations, you should attend this conference.) MEETING CHANGE NOTICE: There WILL be a regular club meeting the next morning.
a1. Club
President Steve asked that when you want to e-mail club business, DO NOT reply to all to other e-mails, such as the distribution of The Ripple , district e-mails, etc. Set up your own address book--perhaps Peabody Rotary Board and non-Board lists.
President Steve said that the club has received a Thank You Note from the Red Cross. There was a picture and article of the presentation of our donation in last week's Weekly News. Jeff Doherty tried to get Peggy Pedro fined because her nephew, Jimmy Pedro, had his picture in the Salem News as the #3 athlete from the North Shore in the past 25 years. For those who don't know, and even for those who do know, Jimmy won 2 Bronze medals in the Olympics for Judo.
a2. Vocational
President Steve announced that the Board approved a $500 donation to the Progeria Research Foundation.
The Taste Of The North Shore now has three restaurants signed up. And Bob Sweeney is working on the tickets. They should be ready for the Golf Tournament. The Chamber of Commerce will be sending out e-mail reminders to "Save the Date" of March 24th, 2009.
The International Festival will be on September 14th. Nichole Nelsen is the committee chair. She'll be sending out an e-mail to sign up your volunteer time.
a3. Community
The Golf Tournament is coming soon--September 22nd. So far, 40 golfers have signed up. Perfecto's Caffe and Peabody Financial will sponsor the breakfast; Outback Steakhouse will sponsor the luncheon; and there'll be an Acura MDX as a hole-in-one prize, thanks to Acura of Peabody. Thanks to all!! Joanne Donovan is collecting ALL information, so e-mail her with any donations, golfers, sponsors, etc. as soon as you know about them.
Herb Harris mentioned that he spent all day Saturday interviewing 8 superb candidates Ambassadorial Scholarships. Since the candidates have not yet been notified, he couldn't reveal the results but did say that over $60,000 in scholarships were awarded. The winners (actually ALL were winners in my mind) of the Scholarships will be at the District Membership/Foundation Conference on September 17th. They'll also be at the NE Link on September 26-27, as will scholars from around the world. Herb suggested to members that they attend--even for part--either Friday or Saturday--or the entire 24 hours. The club will pay 100%. But the registration deadline is next week, September 5th.
Mel Babner reminded everyone to sell the Entertainment Books. He thanked Fred deNapoli and Chuck Holden for taking 10 and 5 books, respectively.
Grace introduced our guest speaker, Paula Grimsley, who's the CEO of the Christian Non-profit LadyCare. Grace and Paula met each other in Calcutta, India. Because women, particularly Muslim women, cannot be administered by male doctors, they don't have the proper care--in the example Paula told us about, pre-natal. LadyCare teaches women about pre-natal care and also instructs midwives for save deliveries. She said that four things make a difference for safe deliveries: a clean place, clean string, clean razor blade and a bar of soap. She also teaches breast self-exams and talks about mammographies.
Reminders:
SAVE THE DATE: SEPTEMBER 17TH, from 3:00 TO 8:00PM. This is the date of the District's Membership and Foundation Forum at the Sheraton Ferncroft. This is where all Rotarians will learn more about how Rotary functions. And with this knowledge and tips from the Membership segment, we'll better be able to attract and retain more members. Please make every effort to attend.
NE Link is scheduled for September 26-27, in Worcester--basically 24 hours. But sign up for some of the program or all of it. The only way to register is online at : http://www.northeastlink.org/html/nel_rotreg_active.shtml. Go to the site to learn more about NE Link. And don't forget, unless you'd like to make a contribution, the club will pay for your attendance at NE Link and at the District Conference.

Did you know that Larry Lucchino had been an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1973-4? NELink (September 26-27) is trying to get him to speak. The snag may be that the Red Sox are playing the Evil Empire (aka the Yankees) that weekend. For those who don't read the Rotarian (but you should!!), this month's issue tells us that the Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the LARGEST PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN THE WORLD!! By the way, the other locally well-known person who had been an Ambassadorial Scholar is former Lt. Governor Kerry Healy.
*
There's a Golf Committee meeting every Monday at 9:00AM at Teddy Bettencourt's office at 30 Main Street. Start thinking about and asking potential sponsors as well as golfers. There are only 3+ weeks left until September 22nd!! President Steve wants everyone to obtain a "Perfect 10"--a combination of 10 golfers, sponsors, donation items. He's working on a flyer and registration form which he'll e-mail soon.
*
We'll be selling Penny Candy at the International Festival. Can one still buy candy for a penny? President Steve suggested that we sell bags for the kids (or adults) to fill with candy for a price yet-to-be-determined. Nichole Nelsen is committee chair.
*
On August 21st, Mel Babner will deliver food for the Citizens For Adequate Housing families, temporarily housed in Salem, for the last time.
*
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel Babner. Every nickel helps!! Mel Thanks Dick Berg, Ralph Raynard and Gayle Cavanaugh for their generous contributions.
a4. International
There must be a ton of empty beer cans and bottles from July 4th weekend and all summer--please give them to Mel.
*
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
*
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Jeff collected $46.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
*
50-50 Raffle: The pool was $34. Neither Nichole Nelsen nor Grace Martins picked the KING OF CLUBS or the $50 Joker.
*

1. IS IT THE TRUTH? 2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? 3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP? 4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
