****************************************

Today was our monthly general business meeting. Secretary Gary was not at the meeting.  Treasurer Loring didn't have a report.  Both Peggys were not available to present their committee reports (Foundation and Scholarship).  Steve Smith is continuously working on obtaining new members--as we all should be.  Martha is awaiting word from the District on the District Simplified Grant for the S.T.O.P. program.  Herb has gotten pictures in the Salem News and Peabody Weekly--with a goal of a picture and article in each paper every month.  Grace is doing a great job getting interesting speakers and programs.  There was a bit of discussion as to whether or not to allow City Council members and the Mayor attend the October 15th meeting as our guests or expect them to pay $20.  The guest voice won.  President Cathy reminded club members that Mel has the Entertainment Books.   ALL MEMBERS SHOULD TAKE A SUPPLY TO SELL IN THEIR BUSINESSES, BRANCHES OF THEIR BUSINESSES AND TO THEIR BUSINESS AND SOCIAL NETWORK ACQUAINTANCES.  Saturday, September 12th, is Kids day at Peabody Leather Common.  We hope to particpate in that and the Progeria Race that day.  Sunday, September 13th, is the International Festival.  Joanne circulated a sign-up sheet for ALL members to complete.  If you weren't at today's meeting, e-mail Joanne and let her know when you'll be there--9:00-11:00 for set-up; 11:00-1:00; 1:00-3:00; or 3:00-5:00.  She's been negotiating to get us the best price on blueberry and apple pies.  It was also suggested that we sell some by the slice.  President Cathy reported that plans for the golf tournament are moving along and thanked all who have helped so far.  Vanessa and Past President Elect Steve have been working on the Taste of the North Shore.  There will be a planning session immediately after next week's meeting, so plan to remain. Herb said that he'll be working on the revised Citizens for Adequate Housing schedule and instructions soon.  Jeff described the layout of the kitchen and dining areas.   President Cathy suggested a change of time to 4:45 and that we stay for a little while to serve, then leave the food for everyone to serve themselves and their families.  We'll come up with a service project at some point.  President Cathy mentioned that Past President Elect Steve will be contacting the person at City Hall to put up the "Rotary Meets at the Marriott" signs and will arrange with Cathleen to set a time to put up the "Rotary meets here" sign at the Marriott with a photo op.

President Cathy announced that this year's District Foundation & Membership conference will be on October 1st at the Sheraton Ferncroft in Danvers.  She has a sign-up sheet.  This is a great opportunity to learn a ton about Rotary.  Perhaps you can ask a guest to go with you!!  (Ed.'s note:  Another superb upcoming event is NorthEast Link where you'll get to meet and hear from Ambassadorial Scholars from all around the world.  This year it will be in Boxborough and will be on Saturday, September 26th, and Sunday morning, September 27th.)

President Cathy reminds all that there'll be a Board meeting at her office on Monday at 5:30PM.  ALL are welcome--and encouraged--to attend (particularly if you need a make-up meeting).

*

President Cathy wished Herb and Judi and Loring and Joanna Happy Anniversaries.

*

District Governor Ingrid Brown will visit the club on October 29th.

*

Reminders:

**********************************************

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of

  interest to the club.

        **********************************************

Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements.  Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up.  However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up.  Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings.  Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

  *

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.  Every nickel helps!!  Mel thanks Bob Clattenburg for his generous contributions.

 ******************************

Happy Dollars:  Acting Sergeant-at-arms Grace collected $46

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: Neither President Cathy nor Martha picked the Ace of Diamonds, so neither won the $259.

A "cool" joke for a hot summer day:

A man new to the United States, was told by a friend that ice fishing was a great "American Winter Past Time".

The man went to the sporting goods store and got all the "equipment" (ice drill, stool, etc.) and set out to catch Some fish.

He picked a spot on the ice and started to drill, when all of a sudden he heard a voice say:

"There are no fish down there", so he picked up his gear and moved 50 feet down the ice and started to drill again.

Once again he heard the voice again. "There are no fish down there".  The man in frustration called back:  "How do you know - are you "God" or something???"

The voice answered back: "No I'm the Zamboni driver"

It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member.  It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter.  That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.

LET'S BECOME A 100% SUSTAINING MEMBER CLUB!!

THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:

1. IS IT THE TRUTH?   2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?   3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP?   4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

Please keep this in mind!
