How to propose a member:
Identify an individual (would s/he pass the Four-Way Test?).
Invite that person to a meeting.
Fill out a proposal card.
Board votes on the proposed member.
Proposed member has information session with Secretary Gary.
Proposed member is asked if s/he would like to join. If yes, application is signed.
Proposed member's name is published in The Ripple.
If there are no objections sent in writing to the Membership Chair within seven days, the proposed member becomes a member.

In President Martha's absence, Vice President Vanessa ran today's meeting with adept proficiency.
She started off with Committee Reports:
Membership: Steve S handed out the updated brochures. Be sure to pick up a few from him to distribute. By the way, he's more than happy to follow up on prospective members for or with you. Just ask. A reminder that on August 26th,to honor Rotary's Membership and Extension month, our meeting will be a membership brainstorming session. And on September 23rd we'll have a formal Membership meeting with prospective member guests.
Foundation: Peggy P was not in attendance, so no report.
Media: Herb mentioned that there was a problem with the website and the July 29th edition of The Ripple. (Ed.'s note: Thanks to Brightworks, the site is all set now.) Please notify any of the committee (Bob W, Brian, Loring, Steve M, Vanessa or Herb) with your recommendations and suggestions for improvements to the website.
Program: In Grace's absence, Herb said that we have speakers or programs through the end of September.
Golf: Bob C said that there will be a committee meeting next week. But NOW is the time to continue to sell golfers, ads, raffle items and sponsorships. He thanked Steve S for his donation of golf balls. International Festival: In Peggy L's absence, Vanessa said that there will be an International Committee meeting on August 23rd.
Literacy: Cathy reported that our club was the first to turn in a grant request. And this year, it's first come, first served! The calendar (joint project with the PEC) will go to print on Tuesday.
Taste of The North Shore: Vanessa has confirmed with the Danversport Yacht Club that the date will be March 22nd, 2011. Tickets should be available soon--certainly in time for the Golf Tournament. Start talking this up, too, as you have barbecues and travel to see relatives this summer.
Entertainment Books: Mel said that he should have the 2011 books to distribute next week. And he has a small supply of 2010 books to give free (with the purchcase of the 2011 book), as well.
Tonight (August 5th) Mel and Cathy will be serving at Citizens For Adequate Housing.
Next week, we'll be hearing John Meakin's classification speech. You don't want to miss this!
The next Board Meeting will be at the Library on WEDNESDAY, August 18th. ALL members are welcome.
Vanessa introduced our guest speaker, Sandi Drover, the Outreach Coordinator for the Healthy Peabody Collaborative. The HPC's function is to keep Peabody's kids safe--educating them on underage drinking, illegal drug use, etc. She speaks throughout the city on these issues as well as on Cable TV. Peabody Rotary and the HPC have worked together on several projects.

50-50 Raffle: Neither Megan nor Vanessa picked the Seven of Hearts so no-one won the $106.00. And neither picked the $50 Joker.

Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! He thanks former member and President Dick Berg,Bob C and Herb for their generous contributions.

Our nephew was getting married to a doctor's daughter. At the wedding reception, the father of the bride stood to read his toast, which he had scribbled on a piece of scrap paper. Several times during his speech, he halted, overcome with what I assumed was a moment of deep emotion. But after a particularly long pause, he explained, "I'm sorry. I can't seem to make out what I've written down." Looking out into the audience, he asked, "Is there a pharmacist in the house?"
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
