Guests: None
****************************************
President Martha began the meeting by mentioning that Tom Manual of the Danvers Rotary Club is putting together a softball tournament to be held on September 25th-26th. Is anyone interested? Let President Martha know.
Committee Reports:
Golf: Bob C said that there was a golf committee meeting yesterday and they will be weekly, now. So far there are 66 golfers signed up. But NOW is the time to continue to sell golfers, ads, raffle items and sponsorships. The Tournament is only LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS AWAY!!!!! The Chamber of Commerce is doing the adbook, so let them know if you want to advertise. We'll be collecting raffle and auction items, as well as sponsorships. Bob W donated two bottles of very fine wine; Cathleen donated a gift certificate from the Courtyard Marriott in Danvers; and there's a GC from Paradise Golf. North Shore Bank will be the bag sponsor; Beverly Hospital the Mulligan sponsor; Eastern Bank and the Marriott have also contributed, as has Mr. Handyman. Definitely needed are $125 Tee Sponsorships as well as ads for the adbook. Please help Bob and join his committee. Here's the link to the Peabody Chamber of Commerce's website with the flyer: http://secure.chambermaster.com/FCKeditor/UserFiles/chambers/340/File/Golf%202010.pdf
International Festival: Peggy L said that she has ordered the pies--200 Apple and 50 Blueberry. They'll be delivered to the Y on Saturday, September 11th. Peggy has a couple of volunteers who will transport the pies on Sunday. And she passed around a sign-up sheet for 2-hour shifts. Let her know when you can help. President Martha said that Arrow Paper has donated fully biogradable plates--enough to last us at least three years.
Literacy: Cathy brought the joint Rotary/PEC calendars fresh off the press. Several members purchased some. Let Cathy know if you want one. Loring will be happy to bill you the $20.
Entertainment Books: Mel said that the 2011 books are in and some have been distributed. He'd like all members to take some to sell--particularly those who have customers, clients, patients who visit their locations. He thanked Vanessa, President Martha, Herb, and former members Dr. Steve Blomerth and Dr. Mike Eidelman for taking the books to sell.
The thrust of today's meeting was membership development. Membership Chair Steve S ran this part of today's meeting. Cathy began by saying that she had investigated our club's history--mainly through RI. She passed around some of her findings, including an article about the wild and crazy bunch of Peabody Rotarians in our club's initial year, 1920, at the New England Rotary convention in Swampscott. She also had a copy of our original charter request. Steve S then asked those at each of the three tables to discuss three items: The advantages of Rotary; what objections are there to joining our club?; constructive ways to engage a positive discussion to offset those objections. Many great ideas were presented. Rather than miss any of them here, Steve will put them all together and distribute the findings to all.
******************************
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Bob C collected $101.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Bob C nor Visiting Rotarian Lace picked the Seven of Hearts so no-one won the $140.00. And neither picked the $50 Joker.
*******************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! He thanks former member and President Dick Berg,Bob C and Herb for their generous contributions.
*************************
NEXT MEETINGS:
September 2, 2010: Don Dolliber, Citizenship Quiz
September 9, 2010: Classification Speech, Jesse Philbrick
September 16, 2010: District Governor Steve May. Board Meeting to follow.
September 23, 2010: Special Membership meeting--invite a guest!
September 30, 2010: Sergei Novikov, Speaking Music
Please make every effort to attend your Rotary meetings. The more members we have each week, the better we look to potential members--and to our visitors and speakers.
A beautiful female college student comes to a young professor's office. She glances down the hall, closes his door, kneels pleadingly, "I would do anything to pass this exam."
She leans closer to him, flips back her hair, gazes meaningfully into his eyes. "I mean" she whispers, "I would do - anything!!!"
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
