  Question of the week:

Q:  Part a.  What Red Sox player has been on the winning teams of the Little League, College and Major League Baseball World Series?

Part b.  What Red Sox player is rumored to be having an affair with Heidi Watney, thus causing his divorce filing?  Answers to these questions are within this newsletter.

If you cannot answer the question at our meeting next week, or by e-mail if you don't attend next week, be prepared to pay the consequences. Because we had so many visitors and so much to do this week,  President Steve didn't ask the question from last week's Ripple.  That will reappear in a future issue.

Meeting notes

Today's visiting Rotarians: DG Tom Elliott, DGN Steve May, PDG Julia Phelps, PDG Victor Saldanha, ADG's Helene Anderson Michel, Gerry McCarthy, Bob Wood, Alex (and Heidi) Ushakoff, District PR Director Alan Michel, District Assistant Treasurer Peter Simonson, "Hollywood" Allain from danvers and his father, Alan, Past President of Peabody Rotary, Steve Ray of Winthrop.

Guests:   Mayor Michael Bonfanti and aide Mary Bellevance; Inactive Member Rudy Van Oeveren; former member Deanne Healey; Steve Padulsky; Martha Holden, guest of Peggy Pedro; Ken Toumajian, guest of Grace Martins.

Today's Breakfast: NO garlic with:  scrambled eggs, roasted red potatoes (sound familiar?), bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, muffins, croissants and pastry, juice and coffee.

President Steve began the meeting by welcoming all our visitors.  He thanked Mike Tallo and Grace Martins for all they did to make the club Fellowship program on Saturday so successful!!  The Golf tournament is fast approaching so President Steve asked all members to do their parts to get golfers, sponsorships, etc.  The date of the Golf Tounament at the Meadows in Peabody, in case you forgot, is September 22nd.  He hopes to have tickets for the Taste Of The North Shore available for the 22nd.  Speaking of The Taste, two restaurants have already signed up.  President Steve also reminded everyone to sell the Entertainment books.

a.  Jason Varitek

There will be a Board Meeting on Monday, August 25th, at 6:00PM, at GraVoc, 81 Main Street.

District Governor Tom Elliott wished the club a lot of success with the breakfast club.  He told us that since our club's inception nearly 89 years ago, it had always been a lunch club.  So this is a huge step.

Mayor Michael Bonfanti then addressed our club.  He spoke about Peabody and its economic situation.  He urged everyone to VOTE NO on Question One, which asks us to eliminate the income tax.  Sounds good to individuals--but shortsighted--in these tough economic times, but who'll pay the bills if that passes?  If the state and cities and towns are having economic woes now, what will happen if this revenue is lost?  Peabody would lose the entire Police, Fire and Library budgets of $15 Million.  The Mayor fears that the State Legislature will not have the backbone to overrule a vote to ruin the state.

PDG Julia Phelps awarded Past President Grace the Governor's Citation for our club's exceeding goals last year.  PDG Julia also mentioned that there will be a presentation to RI of a major contribution to the Polio Plus program in early September.  It will be held in Connecticut and RI President Lee is expected to accept the donation there.  Hope we can go there as a group!

*

ADG and Webmaster Bob Wood recommended that we all go to the newly revamped District 7930 website (http://www.rotary7930.org/)  for loads of information and links.  We're now receiving a monthly District e-newsletter.  The paper will continue on a quarterly basis.

Reminders:

NE Link is scheduled for September 26-27, in Worcester--basically 24 hours.  But sign up for some of the program or all of it.  The only way to register is online at :  http://www.northeastlink.org/html/nel_rotreg_active.shtml.  Go to the site to learn more about NE Link.  And don't forget, unless you'd like to make a contribution, the club will pay for your attendance at NE Link and at the District Conference.

b.  see a.

There's a Golf Committee meeting every Monday at 9:00AM at Teddy Bettencourt's office at 30 Main Street.  Start thinking about and asking potential sponsors as well as golfers.  There are only 5 weeks left until September 22nd!!   President Steve wants everyone to obtain a "Perfect 10"--a combination of 10 golfers, sponsors, donation items.  He's working on a flyer and registration form which he'll e-mail soon.

We'll be selling Penny Candy at the International Festival.  Can one still buy candy for a penny? President Steve suggested that we sell bags for the kids (or adults) to fill with candy for a price yet-to-be-determined.

*

SAVE THE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 17TH, from 3:00 TO 8:00PM.  This is the date of the District's Membership and Foundation Forum at the Sheraton Ferncroft.  This is where all Rotarians will learn more about how Rotary functions.  And with this knowledge and tips from the Membership segment, we'll better be able to attract and retain more members.  Please make every effort to attend.

Did you know that Larry Lucchino had been an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1973-4?  NELink (September 26-27) is trying to get him to speak.  The snag may be that the Red Sox are playing the Evil Empire (aka the Yankees) that weekend.  For those who don't read the Rotarian (but you should!!), this month's issue tells us that the Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the LARGEST PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN THE WORLD!!  By the way, the other locally well-known person who had been an Ambassadorial Scholar is former Lt. Governor Kerry Healy.

*

On August 21st, Mel Babner will deliver food for the Citizens For Adequate Housing families, temporarily housed in Salem, for the last time.

*

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel Babner.  Every nickel helps!!  Mel Thanks Dick Berg, Ralph Raynard and Gayle Cavanaugh for their generous contributions.

There must be a ton of empty beer cans and bottles from July 4th weekend and all summer--please give them to Mel.

*

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

 *

Happy Dollars:  Acting Sergeant-at-arms Herb Harris collected $114.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

*

50-50 Raffle:  The new winning card, chosen by DG Tom Elliott, is the KING OF CLUBS.  The pool was $21.  Neither Mary Bellevance nor Peggy Pedro picked the right card or the $50 Joker.
