****************************************
President Martha began the meeting by wishing Loring and Joanna a Happy Anniversary, as well as giving birthday greetings to Steve Smith and Catherine DiMambro, in their absence.
Committee Reports:
Membership: In Chairman Steve S's absence, President Martha reminded us that we'll have a Membership Brainstorming session two weeks from today. And on September 23rd we'll have a formal Membership meeting with prospective member guests.
Foundation: Peggy P was not in attendance, so no report.
Media: Herb mentioned that the problem with the website has been taken care of. He also asks that ALL MEMBERS review the site and make recommendations for corrections, additions and deltions. And there are many! Please notify any of the committee (Bob W, Brian, Loring, Steve M, Vanessa or Herb) with your recommendations and suggestions for improvements to the website.
Program: Although Grace was not in attendance to tell us, we have speakers or programs through the end of September.
Golf: Bob C said that there was a committee meeting yesterday. But NOW is the time to continue to sell golfers, ads, raffle items and sponsorships. The Tournament is only SIX WEEKS AWAY!!!!! So far, there are no golfers signed up, but that's not too unusual at this point. North Shore Bank will be the bag sponsor; Beverly Hospital the Mulligan sponsor; Eastern Bank and the Marriott have also contributed, as has Mr. Handyman. Definitely needed are $125 Tee Sponsorships as well as ads for the adbook. Please help Bob and join his committee. The next meeting will be in a couple of weeks, but there's plenty to do before then. Here's the link to the Peabody Chamber of Commerce's website with the flyer: http://secure.chambermaster.com/FCKeditor/UserFiles/chambers/340/File/Golf%202010.pdf
International Festival: Peggy L said that she has ordered the pies--200 Apple and 50 Blueberry. They'll be delivered to the Y on Saturday, September 11th. Peggy will need volunteers to transport the pies on Sunday. Anyone with a truck? And she'll soon be passing around a sign-up sheet for 4-hour shifts. President Martha said that Arrow Paper has donated fully biogradable plates--enough to last us at least three years.
Literacy: In Cathy's absence, President Martha said that the joint Rotary/Ed Council calenday went to print and will be available by the end of the month. The calendars will cost $20 each. Besides the 8 chances to win $50 and 60 chances to win other prizes, the calendars will be full of historic information about Peabody. President Martha also announced that our grant was APPROVED!!! We'll be receiving $3,000 to go along with our investment of a bit over $3,000 to get the pottery studio up and running at NorthEast ARC. This will be the first art studio in Peabody of locally made crafts.
Taste of The North Shore: Vanessa has confirmed with the Danversport Yacht Club that the date will be March 22nd, 2011. Tickets should be available soon--certainly in time for the Golf Tournament. Start talking this up, too, as you have barbecues and travel to see relatives this summer.
Entertainment Books: Mel said that the 2011 books are in and some have been distributed. He'd like all members to take some to sell--particularly those who have customers, clients, patients who visit their locations. He thanked Vanessa, President Martha, Herb, and former members Dr. Steve Blomerth and Dr. Mike Eidelman for taking the books to sell.
President Martha reminded us that there will be no breakfast meeting next week. Instead, there will be an evening of fellowship at Cap's on the Waterfront in Salem. Vanessa will e-mail details and directions to her husband's restaurant. Everyone is encouraged to bring a spouse or other mate (but not both). President Martha asks that everyone behave themselves there.
President Martha reminded us of the brief board meeting to be held on Wednesday, August 18th, at 5:30.
ADG Helene expressed her continued amazement at all our little club does.
It's too bad that we didn't have a camcorder for John Meakin's classification speech. A perfect example of how it should be done. You could tell that he's not only a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Training, but also an instructor, as he told us. He lives a full and personally rewarding life--beginning as a father, then as a husband, then in the community--his career at Salem Five as a Financial Planner helping clients, church, Rotary and finally in his liesure life--an outdoorsman at heart. He loves skiing, hiking, fishing, tennis, golf, bike riding and generally being adventurous. Immediately after college graduation, he spent 7 months backpacking around the world. Recently he and family went to Panama for a wedding. The resort was in the middle of the rainforest (or, as John said, formerly known as the less inticing jungle). Instead of going on organized tours, he took his daughters into the undeveloped rainforest in their rental car. Just an example of John being John. He always wants to give back. As a financial Planner with Salem Five, his aim is to help his clients achieve their financial goals. He feels he's overly responsible and perhaps anal retentive (his words, not mine). He's treasurer of his church's choir. Overall, he's a very caring person--with family, clients, and the community. Great presentation, John!
******************************
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Bob C collected $77.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Loring nor John M picked the Seven of Hearts so no-one won the $123.50. And neither picked the $50 Joker.
*******************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! He thanks former member and President Dick Berg,Bob C and Herb for their generous contributions.

UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES:
August 18, 2010: Board Meeting at Peabody Institute Library
Why is it that if someone tells you that there are 1 billion stars in the universe you will believe them, but if they tell you a wall has wet paint you will have to touch it to be sure?
- If people from Poland are called "Poles," why aren't people from Holland called "Holes?"
- "I am" is reportedly the shortest sentence in the English language. Could it be that "I Do," is the longest sentence?
- When cheese gets its picture taken, what does it say?
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
