April is Magazine Month! (the Rotarian)

How to propose a member:
Identify an individual (would s/he pass the Four-Way Test?).
Invite that person to a meeting.
Fill out a proposal card.
Board votes on the proposed member.
Proposed member has information session with Secretary Gary.
Proposed member is asked if s/he would like to join. If yes, application is signed.
Proposed member's name is published in The Ripple.
If there are no objections sent in writing to the Membership Chair within seven days, the proposed member becomes a member.
Brian Cassidy has been proposed as a new member. Brian is an Attorney at Law here in Peabody.
If anyone finds objection to his membership, notify Membership Chair Steve Smith by April 1, 2010.

Today was a short meeting full of helpful scheduling reminders...
April 1st is the deadline for getting discount rates on reservations for the District Conference in Rockport Maine. Check the District website for more information and a link to the resort. www.rotary7930.org
The District Assembly is Wednesday April 14. Martha will be leaving for her Ireland vacation this weekend, so if anyone is interested in coming after today please let Cathy know.
The Scholarship application deadline is April 15. Peggy has published information in the paper and at the schools. A handful have come in so far. Her tentative committee is Martha, Steve P, Jeff, Gary, and Peggy.
The International Convention in going to be held in Montreal this year, June 20-23. Bob Wood spoke of the wonderful events that happen during these trips and that it is such a unique opportunity to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world. Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!!

From Herb: "Since I'm not editing The Ripple these days I thought I'd send out this timely joke--in honor of Sunday night's Opening game."
A first grade teacher in New York explained to her class that she’s a huge Yankees fan. She asked her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Yankees fans.
Everyone in the class raised their hands except for one girl. The teacher looked at the girl with surprise and said, "Janie, why didn't you raise your hand?"
"Because I'm not a Yankees fan," she replied.
The teacher, shocked, asked, "Well, if you’re not a Yankees fan, then what team are you a fan of?"
"I am a Red Sox fan, and proud of it," Janie replied.
The teacher could not believe her ears. "Janie, why in the world are you a Red Sox fan?"
She answered, "Because my mom is a Red Sox fan and my dad is a Red Sox fan, so I'm a Red Sox fan, too!"
"Well," said the teacher in an annoyed tone, "That is no reason for you to be a Red Sox fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all of the time. What if your mom was a fool and your dad was a fool, what would you be then?"
"Then," Janie said smiling, "I'd be a Yankees fan."
