Peabody Rotary Embarks on Drug Education Project in 2005 Following a luncheon presentation at the Peabody Rotary Club's August 9, 2005 luncheon meeting by Peabody Mayor Michael Bonfanti, Peabody Police Chief Robert Champagne, and Essex County District Attorney's Assistant Debra MacGregor, the Rotary Club of Peabody Board of Directors voted unanimously to fund 7,500 brochures on drug education for elementary and middle school children in Peabody Public Schools as part of a joint project with other organizations. The value of the Club's contribution is approximately $2,500. The original idea for the Peabody Rotary drug education project came from Rudy Van Oeveren, President Elect of the Peabody Rotary Club. With the assistance of member Dave Hall, the Mayor's office was contacted and the luncheon presentation was confirmed. The rest is now history. Quotes from today's presentations: Peabody Mayor Michael Bonfanti - "The key is awareness and education." Peabody Police Chief Robert Champagne - "The best anti-drug in America is a parent." Debra MacGregor, District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's office - "The drug epidemic is everywhere!"
